Saneg Implements Vapor Recovery System at Oil Storage Facilities

Saneg has completed the implementation of a modern vapor recovery system at its oil storage facilities in the Karshi and Mubarek production units. The project aims to reduce harmful emissions, enhance environmental and industrial safety, and minimize hydrocarbon losses during storage. Its execution marks a significant milestone in Saneg’s strategy to green its operations and achieve its climate goals.

Breathing gases, which consist of hydrocarbon vapors, are formed inside storage tanks due to temperature fluctuations (“small breathing”) and during oil loading or unloading operations (“large breathing”). Without specialized technologies, these processes result in annual losses exceeding 8 million cubic meters of vapors. This volume corresponds to over 160,000 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions released into the atmosphere — a scale of pollution that would require planting more than 7 million trees to offset.

To eliminate these losses, Saneg has introduced an automated vapor recovery and disposal system. The solution includes a sealed vapor extraction system from the tanks, an underground pipeline network for transportation, and a modern flare unit capable of neutralizing up to 99% of the collected gas mixture. The vapors are now captured and subjected to controlled and environmentally safe combustion.

The design and technical engineering of the project were carried out by GRDC (Geo Research & Development Company). Financing and investment support were provided by VEMA Carbon (Switzerland) as part of a global initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“As a result of the project, we have significantly reduced emissions of volatile organic compounds, minimized petroleum product losses, and improved the industrial safety of storage sites. This new approach aligns with international environmental protection standards and contributes to reducing the company’s carbon footprint by more than 160,000 tons of CO₂ annually”, - noted Azizbek Nazarov, Deputy CEO for Strategic Project Development at Saneg.

This initiative forms part of Saneg’s long-term program for decarbonizing and modernizing its production assets. The company continues to implement solutions that align with ESG principles and the global agenda for sustainable energy development.
